Sometimes, we will be unable to save it, and we will recommend tooth extraction. At Andersen Dental Center, we will always recommend the best and most health-conscious dental procedures, and sometimes a tooth extraction is that option.

Why Tooth Extractions are Performed

A tooth extracted and being examined in Vancouver, WA.When a tooth has reached the end of its ability to help you eat and speak due to physical trauma or decay, a tooth extraction will be used to remove it from your mouth. Many times we can repair and restore damaged teeth using dental crowns, fillings, root canals, or other treatment methods. Tooth extractions are only performed when nothing else is a viable option. Some reasons that you might need a tooth extraction include:

  • Extra teeth that prevent adult teeth from coming in
  • Wisdom teeth that will not fit in your mouth
  • Baby teeth that don’t come out and block adult teeth from coming in
  • Extreme decay
  • To make room for orthodontic work to take place
  • Some cancer treatments can cause teeth to become an infection risk

Tooth Extraction Preparation

We will prepare for your tooth extraction by taking a digital X-ray of your mouth so that we can build a treatment plan for you. Making sure that your procedure goes off safely and according to plan is our highest priority. In some circumstances, we will take panoramic X-rays of your mouth, like in the case of wisdom tooth extractions. In some circumstances, we will prescribe antibiotics to be taken before or after surgery. It is important that you finish taking any and all antibiotics that you are prescribed.

We will make sure that you are comfortable and properly anesthetized before beginning the procedure. First, we will administer a local anesthetic that will ensure that you feel no pain during the extraction. We also offer a variety of sedation options like nitrous oxide to help with any nerves that you may have going into the procedure. If you would like sedation, just let us know, and we will be happy to accommodate you! Your comfort and safety are our number one concerns.

Types of Tooth Extractions

There are two different kinds of tooth extractions, simple and surgical.

Simple Tooth Extractions

A simple tooth extraction is one that is performed on a tooth that can be seen in the mouth. When we can see and grip the tooth, there is no need for surgery. We simply grip the tooth with a special tool and gently rock it back and forth until it is loose enough to pull out.

Surgical Tooth Extractions

A more complex procedure that is done when we cannot see or grip the tooth, a surgical extraction requires us to make an incision in the gums and remove the tooth with a special set of tools.

If you have a tooth that has been causing you pain, please don’t wait to call us at 360-335-3251 to ask us questions or schedule your appointment.
